Louisiana SNAP Update: New Food Restriction Waiver Begins February 18, 2026
What Families Need to Know About the February 18, 2026 Changes

Families across Louisiana should be aware of an upcoming change to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Beginning February 18, 2026, a new SNAP Food Restriction Waiver will take effect, limiting the purchase of certain sugar-laden food and beverage items when using SNAP benefits. The goal of this change is to encourage healthier food choices and improve public health outcomes statewide.
It is important to note that these restricted items may still be purchased using cash, debit cards, or other forms of payment—the limitation applies only to SNAP benefits.
Why Is This Change Happening?
This update is part of a federally approved demonstration project authorized through Governor Jeff Landry’s Executive Order 25-052, issued in 2025. Louisiana is participating in this pilot effort to explore how nutrition-focused policies may impact long-term health.
