Connecting lawmakers, individuals with disabilities, and family members to make positive change in supports and services for people with disabilities in the Capital Region - East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, East Feleciana, West Feliciana, Iberville, Point Coupee, and Ascension.

LaCan (Louisiana Council's Advocacy Network) helps the Council by advocating for policies, services and supports for people with disabilities. Our mission is to help people with disabilities get the help they need so they can live in their own homes, go to regular schools, and be involved in their communities.

Legislative Roundtables

Roundtables are held in every region of the state before legislative session. You can meet legislators, get up-to-date information on state issues, and learn advocacy skills so you can share your personal story and make a difference.

Yellow Shirt Days

Yellow Shirt Days happen throughout the year. LaCAN members attend important meetings where big decisions are being made. LaCAN Leaders help organize members in their area so they can attend these meetings.

Legislative Visits

One of the best ways to show a legislator why change is needed is by sharing real stories. LaCAN Leaders help their members by giving tell their personal stories during visits with their legislators.

Information + Action Alerts

Alerts tell LaCAN members about changes to laws or policies that might impact people with disabilities and the services they get. Action Alerts also let members know what they can do to speak up about these changes.

LaCAN advocates for service systems that support children and adults with disabilities to live in their own homes and be fully-included and participating members of their local schools and communities.


LaCAN provides information and support to individuals wishing to effectively advocate for systems change in the areas of home and community-based services, education, and employment. Regional LaCAN teams include individuals with disabilities, their family members, and professionals. These members are notified by email or phone when communication with state agency officials, legislators or the Governor is necessary.
